003: Mid-Autumn Special

In honor of the holiday, today's line up of songs all have the word "moon" in the title. I hope everyone has a great Mid-Autumn Festival. Here's a little something from me to listen to while you drink wine and eat mooncakes under the roundest moon of the year.

中秋节快乐! :)

title: 彩云追月 ["Cai Yun Zhui Yue" - "Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon"]
artist: 爱戴 AKA Edell Ai
genre: cpop
comments: I love this cover to bits! I mean, I've always loved this song as it is very very pretty, but in a cappella form with gorgeous gorgeous harmonies? Watch me swoon with happiness. Seriously. It's just that good. I have no other words to say. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

月半弯 ["Yue Ban Wan" - "Curved Half Moon"]
artist: 陈坤 AKA Aloys Chen
genre: cpop
comments: Pretty much your generic pop ballad, but with really really pretty vocals. The first time I heard this song, I couldn't help, but put it on repeat for several days. Although I tend to be skeptical about actors-turned-singers, Chen Kun has a really smooth, mellow-ish voice that really suits this song. Plus, it also helps that the chorus is catchy with fairly simple lyrics, so it's really easy to sing along with him.

title: 月亮代表我的心 ["Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo de Xin" - "The Moon Represents My Heart"]
artist: 邓丽君 AKA Teresa Teng
genre: cpop
comments: Anyone who has grown up in a Chinese household probably knows of Teresa Teng. In many ways, Teresa Teng can be considered as the creator of modern Chinese pop and her music is incredibly well-known throughout Asia. This particular song is arguably her most famous song and has been covered multiple times by many different artists. Like most of her music, the theme is simple, but very pretty, with very soft, sweet, almost breathy vocals. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

title: 白月光 ["Bai Yue Guang" - "White Moonlight"]
artist: 张信哲 AKA Jeff Chang
genre: cpop
comments: The first time I heard this song, I heard it as a really kick-ass R&B cover on a Chinese singing competition and I loved it. The original version's slower and very ballad-esque, but no less beautiful. The melody is slightly melancholy and the lyrics are outright depressing, but Jeff Chang's vocals are as glorious as ever and the simple piano and cello accompaniment are just right for the song. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

title: 月圆花好 ["Yue Yuan Hua Hao" - "Full Moon and Blooming Flowers"]
artist: 乔维怡 AKA Qiao Wei Yi
genre: cpop
comments: Speak of the devil! The cover of the above Jeff Chang song that I heard was sung by Qiao Wei Yi, and here she is with another kickass cover of a classic Chinese ballad. During the competition, I remember one of the judges saying that her voice is like a light wind on a dark star-studded night, and this song just... really showcases it well. Her voice is smooth and light, and when it first comes in, it kind of sends a chill down my spine. Really really good stuff. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

title: 城里的月光 ["Cheng Li de Yue Guang" - "The Moonlight in Town"]
artist: 许美静 AKA Mavis Hee
genre: cpop
comments: To be completely honest, I'm not very familiar with Mavis Hee, but from what I can tell, she has a very nice, soft voice that goes well with this slow ballad. I've heard several faster, livelier renditions of this song, but the original takes a slower, more tender spin on things, and I think I like it. Give it a try, maybe you'll like it too. :)

title: 弯弯的月亮 ["Wan Wan de Yue Liang" - "The Curved Moon"]
artist: 刘欢 AKA Liu Huan
genre: cpop
comments: One of my favorite classic Chinese ballads ever, no joke. I'm not a huge fan of Liu Huan, but he has some really kickass songs, and seriously? The guy can sing, and it's really cool to watch him sing live 'cause he really gets so emotionally into each song. So, strong vocals aside, the song itself is just really well written and I love the sounds of running water and the tinkly accompanent. It's just one of those really pretty songs that you may have heard in a Chinese restaurant before. Good stuff, good stuff.

title: 月光 ["Yue Guang" - "Moonlight"]
artist: 王心凌 AKA Cyndi Wang
genre: cpop
comments: Although I haven't been a fan of Cyndi Wang for a good couple of years [she has some good stuff, but after a while, all of her music starts sounding the same], Yue Guang will always be one of my favorite songs by her. Like most of her songs, it's very cute, mellow and happy, with a gentle accompaniment of guitar and soft, gentle vocals. Overall, a very soothing "cute" song; I like~

title: 舞月光 ["Wu Yue Guang" - "Moonlight of Dance"]
artist: 伍思凯 AKA Sky Wu
genre: cpop
comments: Hello, addictive catchy song. And it really is, too, what with all the crazy instrumentals and a strong unwavering beat. I don't know much about Sky Wu as a singer, but I like his vocals well enough [his voice is very mellow, but with an edge]. The song itself sounds distinctly Spanish, but with a bit of oriental flavoring added in. Although I don't find Wu Yue Guang outstanding, I do enjoy listening to it very much and I really don't have much to say beyond that.

Don't forget to COMMENT with what you download! Input on your part helps me decide what to upload on the next rotation!

Snagged them all: my Chinese music folder is seriously lacking and that makes me sad. Thanks for sharing! =)

Haha, also the last song sounds more Italian, I think. Like something you'd hear at the Olive Garden.

Hhaha, that works too! The guitar [?? is it guitar even?] parts sound rather Sicilian.
